Welsh Lib Dems welcome Sarah Wollaston

Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds MP has enthusiastically welcomed Sarah Wollaston to the Liberal Democrats, following her decision to join the party.

She is the third new MP the Liberal Democrats have gained in the last three months, following Jane Dodds' by-election victory in Brecon and Radnorshire, and Chuka Umunna joining the party.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds commented:

I’m delighted my time as the Liberal Democrats newest MP has been so short-lived! Sarah’s been one of the most effective and respected MPs in Parliament over the past decade and has a record of prioritizing the national interest above her own
.

I’m looking forward to working with her in Parliament to prevent no deal and to give the people the final say and the opportunity to stop Brexit.

Our best ever European election results, my victory in Brecon and Radnorshire and the defections of both Chuka and Sarah now prove the Liberal Democrats have real momentum.

We are the clear home for anyone, like Sarah and Chuka, disaffected and in despair with Labour and the Conservatives. If you are fed up with Jeremy Corbyn and Boris Johnson’s support for Brexit, failure to tackle intolerance within their party and being hell-bent on reckless economic destruction, we are the party for you.

Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Wollaston said:

I am delighted to be joining the Liberal Democrats under the leadership of Jo Swinson.

I believe the best way for me to represent my constituents in Totnes is to be working as part of a fantastic team of Liberal Democrat MPs who are unequivocally making the case for us to remain at the heart of Europe, as well as campaigning for social justice, the environment and our public services.

Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Jo Swinson said:

I am delighted to welcome Sarah to the Liberal Democrats.

We have worked together for many months to fight to stop Brexit and, as one of the most respected Members of Parliament, she brings real expertise to our team.

The Liberal Democrats are growing – over 30,000 people, alongside Sarah, have joined us since our best ever results in the European Elections in May. As the strongest party for Remainers, we will lead the fight to stop Brexit.

Significant Gaps Remain in Welsh Government Building Safety Announcement

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have welcomed progress announced today in the Welsh Government’s building safety announcement but have warned significant gaps remain. Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds MS and Cardiff Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Rhys Taylor addressing building saftey campaigners.   The announcement given by Environment Minister Julie James MS confirmed that 9 property developers have now signed up to the Welsh Government’s “Developers Pact” agreeing in theory their responsibility to remediate buildings they constructed with safety defects.   The announcement follows a lengthy campaign by leaseholders in the five years since the Grenfell Tower Disaster.   However, three major developers are still yet to reply.   The Welsh Liberal Democrats have stated that due to the Welsh Government’s failure to work with the UK Government on the Building Safety Act, they are left with little to no options to deal with the property de...

Jo Swinson: Serious talks on Lib Dem-Plaid election pact

The Wales BBC Report : The Liberal Democrats are "seriously in discussions" with Plaid Cymru to agree a pact at the next general election, Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson has said. A poll is expected before Christmas because Boris Johnson's government has no majority in the House of Commons. The Liberal Democrats won the recent Brecon and Radnorshire by-election after Plaid agreed not to stand.  Opposition MPs have twice rejected the government's attempts to trigger a general election, insisting they want to ensure the UK does not leave the EU without a deal at the end of October before they vote for an election. Conservative m Asked how that was progressing, Ms Swinson told BBC Sunday Politics Wales: "There are constructive discussions underway…but those discussions will take their course and announcements will be made as that happens." Speaking ahead of her party's autumn conference, beginning in Bournemouth this weekend, the Lib Dem leade...

Calls for Labour to Go Further on War on Plastic

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have called on Welsh Labour to be more ambitious in its war on plastic and introduce a bottle deposit scheme in Wales. While welcoming the long-delayed plans to ban single-use carrier bags and plastic drinking straws in Wales, the Welsh Liberal Democrats said there was more to be done.   Under legislation introduced today, single-use carrier bags, plastic drinking straws, plastic plates, cutlery, stirrers and cotton buds would all be banned under the proposed new law.   Research from Wrap Cymru estimates that 400,000 tonnes of plastic waste are generated in Wales each year, with 67 per cent of that waste being packaging. Another report by the Marine Conservation Society found that there were 29 drinks containers for every 100 meters of beach in Wales.   A Deposit Return Scheme, also known as a bottle deposit scheme, encourages people to recycle drinks containers such as plastic or glass bottles. People pay a small deposit f...
