Labour neglect has led to demise of Roath’s former Gaiety cinema

The go-ahead for the demolition of a hundred-year old cinema in Cardiff is a sad indictment of neglect by the city’s Labour council according to Councillor Rodney Berman, the lead Welsh Liberal Democrat candidate for the wider South Wales Central region at the 2021 Senedd election.
Cardiff’s Labour-run council has recently approved the demolition of the former Gaiety cinema in City Road in the Roath area of the city. The cinema was opened in 1912 and the building has also served as both a bingo hall and a bowling alley.
Councillor Berman said: “The Gaiety has been left repeatedly to rot since the Roath area elected Labour councillors in 2012, and the city’s Labour-run council has repeatedly failed to step in to address this over the last eight years.
“This once fine building is part of Roath’s heritage, but that heritage has sadly been squandered by the current Labour-run council. Labour councillors have sat back whilst the building has been left to steadily deteriorate into an eye sore.
“I am deeply saddened that the council has now given permission for the building to be demolished and replaced with a bland, modern development of nearly 1,000 new student rooms. Parts of Cardiff have become over saturated with student accommodation in recent years and it is hard to see that this replacement development will be sustainable within the Roath community.”

Notes: Councillor Rodney Berman is the Welsh Liberal Democrats’ lead candidate for South Wales Central for the next election to the Senedd set to be held in May 2021. He is currently a Welsh Liberal Democrat councillor for Cardiff’s Penylan ward and was previously the leader of Cardiff Council from 2004 until 2012.

Significant Gaps Remain in Welsh Government Building Safety Announcement

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have welcomed progress announced today in the Welsh Government’s building safety announcement but have warned significant gaps remain. Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds MS and Cardiff Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Rhys Taylor addressing building saftey campaigners.   The announcement given by Environment Minister Julie James MS confirmed that 9 property developers have now signed up to the Welsh Government’s “Developers Pact” agreeing in theory their responsibility to remediate buildings they constructed with safety defects.   The announcement follows a lengthy campaign by leaseholders in the five years since the Grenfell Tower Disaster.   However, three major developers are still yet to reply.   The Welsh Liberal Democrats have stated that due to the Welsh Government’s failure to work with the UK Government on the Building Safety Act, they are left with little to no options to deal with the property de...

Jo Swinson: Serious talks on Lib Dem-Plaid election pact

The Wales BBC Report : The Liberal Democrats are "seriously in discussions" with Plaid Cymru to agree a pact at the next general election, Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson has said. A poll is expected before Christmas because Boris Johnson's government has no majority in the House of Commons. The Liberal Democrats won the recent Brecon and Radnorshire by-election after Plaid agreed not to stand.  Opposition MPs have twice rejected the government's attempts to trigger a general election, insisting they want to ensure the UK does not leave the EU without a deal at the end of October before they vote for an election. Conservative m Asked how that was progressing, Ms Swinson told BBC Sunday Politics Wales: "There are constructive discussions underway…but those discussions will take their course and announcements will be made as that happens." Speaking ahead of her party's autumn conference, beginning in Bournemouth this weekend, the Lib Dem leade...

Calls for Labour to Go Further on War on Plastic

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have called on Welsh Labour to be more ambitious in its war on plastic and introduce a bottle deposit scheme in Wales. While welcoming the long-delayed plans to ban single-use carrier bags and plastic drinking straws in Wales, the Welsh Liberal Democrats said there was more to be done.   Under legislation introduced today, single-use carrier bags, plastic drinking straws, plastic plates, cutlery, stirrers and cotton buds would all be banned under the proposed new law.   Research from Wrap Cymru estimates that 400,000 tonnes of plastic waste are generated in Wales each year, with 67 per cent of that waste being packaging. Another report by the Marine Conservation Society found that there were 29 drinks containers for every 100 meters of beach in Wales.   A Deposit Return Scheme, also known as a bottle deposit scheme, encourages people to recycle drinks containers such as plastic or glass bottles. People pay a small deposit f...
