Chris Huhne has made his firs appearance in court for allegedly dodging a speeding ticket. The Liberal Democrat resigned as energy and climate change secretary amid claims that he asked his then wife Vicky Pryce to lie by saying she was behind the wheel at the time.
The 59 year old millionaire MP for Eastleigh and Pryce, 59, are both charged with perverting the course of justice after he was allegedly caught by a speeding camera on March 12, 2003.
Following a bitter divorce after Huhne dumped his wife to be with press aide Carina Trimming ham, Pryce clamed he asked “someone” to take the penalty on his behalf to avoid losing his licence.
Huhne and Pryce sat apart from each other inside the dock at Westminster Magistrates Court. The former couple failed to acknowledge each other, making no eye contact and staring straight ahead during proceedings.
Senior District judge Howard Riddle bailed them to appear at Southwark Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on Friday March 2nd 2012.
Huhne is said to be the first cabinet minister in living memory to be charged with a criminal offence.
He is the third to be forced to resign since the coalition Government formed in 2010, following in the footsteps of Liam Fox and David Laws.
